Getting to and from school safely
At our school, student safety is our top priority. As a parent or carer, you play an important role in helping your child travel to and from school safely.
You can help keep our school community safe by:
- Driving and parking carefully, even if you need to park a little further away and walk.
- Setting a good example for your child and others.
- Never calling your child from across the road.
- Always using the safest place to cross the road.
For parents and carers of younger children
Help your child learn how to stay safe when:
- walking to and from school
- travelling in the car
- waiting for, riding on, and getting off the bus
- riding bikes, scooters, or skateboards.
It’s also important to talk about and practise:
- safe routes to and from school
- what to do if something unexpected happens
- how to travel safely in wet weather.
Road Safety
Georges Hall Public School welcomes safe and responsible road users. The streets surrounding our school can become very busy before and after school, with cars and pedestrians all sharing the area.
To keep everyone safe, we ask all members of our school community to follow road rules, show courtesy, and take extra care at all times.
Pedestrians
Pedestrian entry to the school is available at the front gates on Pennington Avenue (including the OOSH gate) and at the back gate on Birdwood Street.
For student safety, these gates are locked during school hours.
Visitors can access the school through the main gate on Pennington Avenue, which has an intercom for contact with the school office.
Pedestrian Crossings
There is one pedestrian crossings near the school — on Birdwood Road.
This crossing is supervised from 8:30am to 9:30am and 3:00pm to 3:30pm to help ensure students and families can cross safely.
Helping Children Cross Safely
Always hold your child’s hand when crossing the road — this is recommended until they are 8 years old.
Please continue to supervise your child near roads until they are at least 10 years old.
It’s also a good idea to practise the “Stop, Look, Listen and Think” routine with your child before crossing:
- Stop one step back from the kerb.
- Look in all directions for traffic.
- Listen for cars, bikes, and other vehicles.
- Think about whether it is safe to cross.
Staff Car Parks and Emergency Access
There are two car parks accessed from Pennington Avenue. These areas are for staff use only to ensure safety and maintain clear access for emergency vehicles.
We kindly ask parents and visitors not to park or walk through these areas.
Parking Safely Around Our School
The streets around our school can be very busy, especially before and after school. Please park close to the kerb and avoid blocking driveways or double parking. Only use legal on-street parking areas.
When walking with your child, remember to look carefully at driveways for cars entering or leaving.
Together, we can help keep everyone safe around our school.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Our Kiss and Ride zones are located on Pennington Avenue. These areas follow No Parking Zone rules — vehicles may stop for a maximum of 2 minutes, and the driver must stay within 3 metres of the vehicle.
When students are getting out of the car, please make sure they exit on the kerb side through the safety door.
For everyone’s safety, please do not call your child across the road or use your car horn to get their attention.
